Papers consist of correspondence, genealogical and biographical material, and other items. Included are the papers of Henry William DeSaussure (1763-1839) and Wilmot G. DeSaussure (1822-1886), and a letter (1740) of James Edward Oglethorpe (1696-1785). Correspondence includes letters (1889-1938) of Henry A. DeSaussure (1851-1903) and other family members concerning family matters and the genealogy of the DeSaussure and related families; and letters (1783-1799) of Daniel DeSaussure (1736-1798), including his correspondence with Edmund Randolph regarding the distribution of federal money to Santo Domingo refugees, and his correspondence (1770-1799) with relatives in Switzerland concerning family matters, business, DeSaussure genealogy, and politics. Genealogical materials (1716-1904) include copies of wills, epitaphs, Bible records, obituaries, and other sources pertaining to the history and genealogy of the DeSaussure family and related families, as well as notes on the DeSaussure, D'Antignac, Gaillard, and Gourdin families and other DeSaussure family connections, with related correspondence. Biographical materials include a scrapbook (1868-1904) containing clippings about Peter Gourdin DeSaussure (1857-1904), a scrapbook and biographical sketch about Wilmot G. DeSaussure (1822-1886), biographies and biographical notes concerning Henry W. DeSaussure (1763-1839) and others, and memoirs (1904) of William Gourdin Young (1830-1907) mainly concerning his service in the Palmetto Guard and the surrender of Ft. Sumter on April 13, 1861. Papers (1846-1881) of Louis Daniel DeSaussure consist of military commissions; military orders and reports (1863-1865); correspondence, mainly with Jefferson Davis concerning Davis's book (1881) about the Confederate government; and photocopies of handbills (1860) advertising slave sales in Charleston (S.C.). Other items include sermons, speeches, and other writings, as well as bonds, receipts, and accounts.
